The kidneys produce a hormone (erythropoietin) that stimulates the bone marrow to produce red blood cells. Red blood cells carry oxygen to all of the other cells in the body including teeth and gum tissue. People with kidney disease don’t always produce enough erythropoietin, and the result can be anemia (a shortage of red blood cells).
